Kara Cavuoto, MD, is the consummate example of an academician who has had an undeniable impact on ophthalmic clinical practice, research, and education. As medical director of the Emergency Department at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, one of the few U.S.
eye hospitals with a specialized emergency department, Cavuoto demonstrated strength and leadership by ensuring 24-hour eye care is available, even throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. She also serves as the director of medical student education in which she guides the educational programs and career development of medical students.
